Hypnotherapist in Melbourne

A woman called me at 9am on a Monday. Her voice was shaking. She had a caesarean section booked for Tuesday. Tomorrow. And she had a needle phobia so severe that the thought of the anaesthesia needle was causing her more terror than the surgery itself.

She’d known about the phobia for years. She’d avoided blood tests, skipped vaccinations, postponed dental work. But you can’t postpone a baby. And now she was out of time.

We did an emergency session that afternoon. The next day, she had her C-section. The needle went in. She was scared, yes. But she was present. She was coping. She met her baby.

That’s the kind of urgency needle phobia carries. It’s not a quirky dislike. It’s a phobia that makes people avoid life-saving medical care.

Note: This article provides general information about needle phobia and hypnotherapy. If you have a medical procedure coming up and need support, please also discuss your needle phobia with your treating doctor.

Needle phobia is more common — and more dangerous — than people realise

Research suggests that up to 25% of adults have some degree of needle fear, and approximately 7–10% have a phobia severe enough to avoid medical procedures. In children, the numbers are higher.

Here’s where it gets serious: needle phobia is one of the few phobias that can directly impact your physical health. Not because of the fear itself, but because of what it makes you avoid:

  • Skipping blood tests that could detect conditions early
  • Refusing vaccinations — for yourself and sometimes for your children
  • Avoiding dental procedures that lead to worsening oral health
  • Postponing surgery because you can’t face the anaesthetic needle
  • Delaying fertility treatment because IVF involves regular injections
  • During pregnancy, skipping glucose tests, rhogam injections, or epidural options

I’ve had clients who haven’t had a blood test in over a decade. Who needed surgery and put it off for years. Who didn’t get their vaccinations because the needle fear was stronger than the health risk. This isn’t a minor inconvenience. It’s a phobia that puts your health at real risk.

Why “just look away” doesn’t work

You’ve heard the advice. “Just don’t look.” “Squeeze something.” “It’s over in a second.”

People who say these things mean well. They don’t understand that needle phobia isn’t about the pain. A needle prick is less painful than a paper cut. Most people with needle phobia know that rationally. The phobia isn’t rational. It’s subconscious.

For many of my clients, the fear is about one or more of these:

  • Loss of control — someone is doing something to your body and you can’t stop it
  • Vulnerability — you’re in a medical setting, partially exposed, unable to leave
  • Penetration anxiety — the concept of something entering your skin triggers a primal alarm
  • A past traumatic experience — a childhood blood test where you were held down, a painful injection, a medical procedure that went wrong
  • Vasovagal response — some people actually faint around needles, and the fear of fainting in public becomes its own layer of anxiety

Telling someone with needle phobia to “just look away” is like telling someone with arachnophobia to “just ignore the spider.” The conscious mind already knows the spider is harmless. The subconscious hasn’t received that update.

How hypnotherapy resolves needle phobia

Needle phobia is one of the most responsive phobias to hypnotherapy, and I say that from extensive clinical experience. Many clients notice a significant reduction in fear within one or two sessions.

Here’s how the process works:

We start by understanding your specific fear. Is it the sight of the needle? The anticipation? The feeling of penetration? The medical setting itself? The fear of fainting? Everyone’s version of needle phobia has a unique signature.

Then, using clinical hypnotherapy, I guide you into a state of deep relaxation and work with your subconscious to:

  • Identify and neutralise the original sensitising event — the memory that installed the phobia
  • Reduce the emotional charge associated with needles from “danger” to “uncomfortable but safe”
  • Install calm, controlled responses that activate automatically when you’re in a medical setting
  • Address the vasovagal fainting response, if relevant, by teaching your nervous system to stay regulated
  • Build a mental rehearsal of your upcoming procedure where you see yourself coping calmly — this primes your subconscious for success

Urgent situations — I understand

Many of my needle phobia clients come to me with a procedure looming. Sometimes it’s weeks away. Sometimes it’s days. I’ve done emergency sessions the afternoon before a surgery, the morning of a vaccination appointment, the day before a blood test.

If you’re in that situation right now — staring down a procedure that you’re dreading — please call me. We can often fit in an urgent session, and even a single session can make a significant difference. You don’t have to face this alone, and you don’t have to postpone medical care because of fear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions do I need for needle phobia?

Many clients see significant improvement in one or two sessions. If the phobia is severe or complex (e.g., linked to a broader medical anxiety), three to four sessions may be needed. If you have an urgent procedure coming up, I’ll prioritise getting you in quickly.

Can children have hypnotherapy for needle phobia?

Yes. Children are excellent candidates for hypnotherapy — their vivid imaginations make the process highly effective. I work with children as young as five, using age-appropriate, playful techniques. For younger children, I may also teach parents the Goulding SleepTalk® Process.

Will I need to see actual needles during the session?

No. Hypnotherapy doesn’t require exposure to the feared object. We work at the subconscious level using guided relaxation and visualisation. You won’t be shown needles or asked to handle them.

Can hypnotherapy help with blood test anxiety specifically?

Absolutely. Blood tests are one of the most common triggers. We work on the full experience — the waiting room, the tourniquet, the vein search, the needle insertion — reprogramming your subconscious response at each step so the process becomes manageable.

I faint when I see needles. Can hypnotherapy help with that?

Yes. The vasovagal response (fainting triggered by needles or blood) is a physiological reaction that hypnotherapy can address. We work with your nervous system to prevent the sudden blood pressure drop that causes fainting. Many clients who previously fainted during procedures have gone on to tolerate them without fainting after hypnotherapy.

Your health is too important to avoid

I know the fear feels bigger than the needle. I know the dread starts days before the appointment. I know you’ve maybe already cancelled an appointment or two, or ten. And I know the shame that comes with being a grown adult who can’t handle something that a five-year-old gets done at the GP.

But here’s the truth you already know: you can’t keep avoiding medical care. The blood test that could catch something early. The vaccination that could protect you and your kids. The dental work that’s getting worse every year you delay.

Needle phobia is one of the fastest phobias to resolve with hypnotherapy. One or two sessions could change your entire relationship with medical care. And that’s not just about comfort. That’s about your long-term health.

If you’ve got a procedure coming up, or you’re just tired of this fear running your medical decisions, let’s talk.
