Hypnotherapy in Melbourne: Frequently Asked Questions

Can hypnotherapy help with anxiety or stress?

Yes, hypnotherapy is highly effective for managing anxiety and stress. It works by helping you access your subconscious mind to change negative thought patterns, promote relaxation, and increase your resilience to stress. Many clients report feeling calmer, more balanced, and better equipped to handle life’s challenges after just a few sessions.

Absolutely. Online hypnotherapy sessions via video call are just as effective as in-person sessions. As long as you’re in a quiet, comfortable space without distractions, the therapeutic process works the same. It’s a convenient option for those with busy schedules, mobility issues, or who live outside Melbourne.

Each hypnotherapy session typically lasts between 60 to 90 minutes. The length may vary depending on the issue being addressed and the individual’s response to the therapy. Your first session may take slightly longer as it involves an initial consultation and goal setting.

Stage hypnosis is a form of entertainment where participants perform amusing acts under suggestion. Clinical hypnotherapy, on the other hand, is a therapeutic tool used to support mental and emotional healing. It’s conducted by a qualified professional in a safe and private setting to address personal concerns.

Your subconscious mind is 30000 times more powerful than your conscious mind.

“Hypnosis is the epitome of mind body medicine. It can enable the mind to tell the body how to react and modify the messages that the body sends to the mind” New York Times

As everybody is unique this will be discussed with your therapist during your initial consultation to ensure your expectations and goals are met.

First you will meet your therapist and they will take you through a counselling session to find out what it is you would like to change and how the issue currently affects different aspects of your life. Then your unique plan will be developed in conjunction with the therapist

Yes. Hypnotherapy is gentle, effective and safe.

Will I remember everything from the session?

Yes, most people remember everything that happens during a hypnotherapy session. Hypnosis is not the same as sleep. You remain aware, in control, and able to recall what was said. Some people may feel very relaxed and have slightly blurred memory, but this is normal and part of the deep relaxation process.

Yes, hypnotherapy often works well alongside other treatments like counselling, psychotherapy, and medical treatments. It can complement existing care by addressing subconscious patterns and enhancing outcomes. Always inform your healthcare provider about all therapies you’re using to ensure coordinated care.

While hypnotherapy is safe for most people, it may not be suitable for those with severe mental health conditions such as schizophrenia or psychosis unless advised by a medical professional. A qualified hypnotherapist will assess your situation to ensure hypnotherapy is appropriate and beneficial for you.

Yes, hypnotherapy can be highly effective for children and teenagers dealing with anxiety, bedwetting, low self-esteem, exam stress, or behavioural issues. The approach is tailored to their age and comfort level, often using storytelling and guided imagery to create a relaxing and supportive environment.

Its different for everyone. Some say they feel as is they are daydreaming, meditating, or so deeply relaxed they just didn’t want to move. Some hear everything that is said however others drift in and out and its all perfectly normal as your subconscious mind is alert while your conscious mind is taking a break. Most people lose track of time and often comment that the session was only 5 minutes when in fact they may have been in trance for 30 minutes.

Yes, if they choose to be. Trance is a natural state we enter several times a day. Have you ever been so captivated by a movie you lost track of time and your surroundings however if your phone rang you could easily break state and answer it? The depth of trance does not indicate the effectiveness of the therapy. Some people enter a light level of trance and others very deep. Each person is unique.

What hypnosis does is relax the conscious mind, responsible for analysing and thinking and accounts for 5 – 10% of mind power. The therapist can access the clients subconscious mind, responsible for long term memory, involuntary body functions, intuition, emotions, values and beliefs accountable for 90 – 95% of mind power. By directly addressing the subconscious, therapists are able to guide the client to discover their own resources and embrace alternative, healthy and helpful scenarios.

A natural, altered state of consciousness. A relaxed hyper suggestible state or dissociated state. To put it simply it has been described as guided daydreaming. The therapist will facilitate the session and the client is in charge of the daydreaming. All hypnosis is self – hypnosis.
