Maybe you’re anxious. And you can’t sleep. And you’re drinking too much. And you’ve started vaping again. And your confidence is shot. And you snap at your partner over nothing.
That’s not six separate problems. I know it feels like it. I know it looks like a list of things that are all broken at once. But in over 25 years of clinical practice, here’s what I’ve learned: when someone walks in with a long list of symptoms, there’s almost always a single subconscious root underneath all of them. Pull that root, and the symptoms start falling away – not one by one, but together.
This article is for the person who doesn’t know where to start. Who looks at their life and thinks: “There’s too much wrong. No one therapist can fix all of this.” Actually, that’s precisely why hypnotherapy makes sense for you. Because it doesn’t treat symptoms. It treats the system generating them.
Why multiple issues usually share a single root
In traditional healthcare, each condition gets its own specialist. Anxiety? See a psychologist. Can’t sleep? See a sleep specialist. Drinking too much? Try AA or an addiction counsellor. Smoking? Patches or nicotine gum. Low confidence? Self-help books.
Each of these is a valid treatment for the symptom it targets. But none of them asks the deeper question: why is all of this happening at the same time?
The answer, in my experience, is almost always the same: the subconscious mind is running a pattern that generates multiple surface-level symptoms simultaneously. Here’s how it typically works:
- An unresolved emotional experience (trauma, loss, a critical childhood, a period of sustained stress) creates a subconscious state of threat or inadequacy.
- The nervous system responds by staying in fight-or-flight mode. Cortisol stays elevated. Sleep is disrupted. The body is permanently braced.
- The person reaches for coping mechanisms: alcohol to quiet the anxiety, vaping for the ritual of self-soothing, food for comfort, avoidance for temporary safety.
- The coping mechanisms create their own problems: dependency, health consequences, guilt, shame.
- The guilt and shame add weight to the original emotional burden, which increases the anxiety, which worsens the sleep, which drives more coping behaviour.
Five symptoms. One root. The root is usually an unresolved subconscious belief or emotional pattern that nobody has ever addressed directly – because everybody has been treating the symptoms.
How hypnotherapy addresses the root, not the leaves
This is the single most powerful thing about hypnotherapy for complex presentations: we don’t treat each issue separately. We go to the source.
In a state of deep relaxation, I work with your subconscious to find the central pattern that’s driving everything. Maybe it’s a belief installed in childhood: “I’m not safe.” That belief generates anxiety (constant vigilance), insomnia (can’t switch off the alarm), drinking (the only way to temporarily feel safe), and low confidence (if the world isn’t safe, neither am I).
When we address the core belief – when we help your subconscious genuinely feel safe – the symptoms that were built on top of it start to resolve. Often simultaneously. Often faster than the person expects.
This is why people come for anxiety and find their sleep improves. Come for addiction and find their confidence returns. Come for insomnia and find their anxiety reduces. The issues weren’t separate. They were branches of the same tree.
Where to start when everything feels broken
If you’re reading this thinking “but I genuinely have multiple problems,” I hear you. And I’m not dismissing any of them. Each symptom is real and each one causes real suffering.
But here’s the practical truth: you don’t need to know which issue to address first. That’s my job. In the initial consultation and first session, we talk through everything – the full picture – and I identify where the subconscious work needs to begin. Usually, there’s a clear thread connecting everything, and once I see it, the treatment path becomes obvious.
You don’t need to arrive with a neat problem description. You can arrive with a messy, complicated, overlapping list of things that are all going wrong at once. That’s normal. That’s human. And it’s exactly what I’m trained to work with.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need separate sessions for each issue?
No. Because we’re addressing the subconscious root, the treatment typically tackles multiple symptoms simultaneously. You don’t need an anxiety program plus a sleep program plus an addiction program. You need one program that addresses what’s driving all of them.
How many sessions will I need if I have multiple issues?
Typically five to eight sessions for complex presentations. Some people see significant improvement across multiple symptoms within three to four sessions. I’ll give you an honest estimate after we talk.
Should I see a psychologist for some issues and a hypnotherapist for others?
You can, and many people do. But one advantage of hypnotherapy is that the subconscious work doesn’t need to be compartmentalised. We can address anxiety, sleep, addiction, and self-esteem within the same treatment because they’re connected at the subconscious level.
What if I’m also on medication for one or more of my issues?
That’s perfectly fine. Hypnotherapy works alongside medication. Always continue medication as prescribed by your doctor and discuss any changes with them.
You’re not too complicated. You’re just connected.
The person who thinks they’re “too much” for one therapist to handle is usually the person who would benefit most from hypnotherapy. Because hypnotherapy doesn’t see a list of separate issues. It sees a subconscious pattern. And patterns, no matter how many symptoms they generate on the surface, can be changed.
If you’ve been putting off getting help because you don’t know which problem to tackle first, the answer is: all of them. At the same time. At the level where they connect.
