I know what you’re picturing. A dark room. A swinging pocket watch. Someone saying “you are getting sleepy” in a deep, mysterious voice. Maybe a spiral on a screen. Maybe clucking like a chicken.
I get it. The movies haven’t done us any favours.
So let me walk you through what actually happens when you come to a hypnotherapy session at my clinic in Bayside Melbourne (or join one online via Zoom). Because the reality is so different from the stereotype that most clients say some version of “That’s it? That was lovely!” when we finish.
Note: This is general information about clinical hypnotherapy sessions. If you have a specific medical or psychological condition, please speak with your GP or health professional.
Before Your Session: The Free Consultation
Every new client starts with a free 15-minute consultation. This isn’t a sales pitch – it’s a conversation. I want to hear what’s going on for you, and you get to hear my voice, ask any questions, and decide whether you feel comfortable working with me. Sometimes I’ll tell someone honestly that I don’t think hypnotherapy is the best fit for their situation and suggest they try another approach first. That happens, and it’s fine.
If we decide to go ahead, we’ll book your first full session.
The First Session: More Talking Than You’d Expect
Your first session is typically longer than follow-ups – it usually runs about 90 minutes. And honestly? A good chunk of that is just talking.
I need to understand your story. Not just the surface-level issue (“I can’t sleep” or “I want to quit smoking”), but the context around it. When did it start? What else was happening in your life at that time? What have you already tried? What does your ideal outcome look like?
This isn’t me being nosy. Every answer helps me tailor the hypnotherapy specifically to you. I don’t use scripts. I don’t have a one-size-fits-all recording I press play on. Your session is built around your unique subconscious landscape, and that takes a bit of understanding first.
I’ll also explain exactly what hypnosis is, what it feels like, and answer any worries you have. By the time we actually begin the hypnotherapy part, you should feel completely at ease.
The Hypnosis Part: What It Actually Feels Like
Here’s where most people’s anxiety evaporates.
I’ll ask you to sit or recline comfortably. You close your eyes (or not – it’s your choice). I guide you into a state of deep relaxation using my voice. Calm, slow, gentle. No sudden noises. No surprises.
What does it feel like? It’s genuinely different for everyone, but here are some common descriptions from my clients:
- “Like that heavy, floaty feeling just before you fall asleep”
- “Like a really good meditation – but better because someone else is guiding it”
- “I felt completely relaxed but could hear everything you said”
- “I lost track of time. I thought it was 10 minutes but it was 40”
- “My body felt incredibly heavy, in a pleasant way, like sinking into a warm bath”
Let me be very clear about a few things:
You are not unconscious. You’re in a state of focused relaxation, similar to being absorbed in a really good book or film. You’re aware of your surroundings. If there were an emergency, you’d open your eyes and respond immediately.
You are always in control. I cannot make you do anything you don’t want to do. Hypnotherapy is not mind control. If I suggested something that didn’t feel right to you, you’d simply reject it. Your subconscious mind has a built-in protection system.
You can’t get “stuck” in hypnosis. This is a common worry and it’s completely unfounded. Hypnosis is a natural state your brain moves in and out of daily. You’ll emerge from it easily, feeling refreshed.
After the Session: What Happens Next
When I bring you out of hypnosis, most people feel deeply relaxed, calm, and often a bit surprised that it’s over. Some feel an immediate shift. Others notice changes gradually over the days that follow – sleeping better, feeling calmer, reaching for the cigarette and realising they don’t actually want it.
I’ll usually give you some guidance for the period between sessions. Sometimes that’s a personalised recording to listen to. Sometimes it’s a simple technique to practise. Nothing onerous – I promise I’m not adding to your to-do list.
Follow-up sessions are typically 60 minutes and tend to go deeper as your subconscious becomes more familiar with the process. Many clients actually look forward to their sessions – not just for the therapeutic benefit, but because the deep relaxation feels genuinely wonderful.
Practical Stuff People Always Ask
What should I wear?
Whatever you’re comfortable in. Jeans, activewear, work clothes – it genuinely doesn’t matter. You’ll be sitting in a comfortable chair, fully clothed, the entire time.
How long does a session last?
First sessions typically run 90 minutes. Follow-up sessions are usually 60 minutes. I never rush.
Can I do sessions online?
Absolutely. I offer sessions via Zoom, and they’re just as effective as in-person appointments. Many clients actually prefer online because they’re already in a relaxed environment. All you need is a quiet space, a stable internet connection, and a comfortable place to sit.
What if I can’t be hypnotised?
Most people can. If you can concentrate on a book or get lost in a film, you can be hypnotised. Some people go into a lighter state and some go deeper – both are effective. The depth of trance doesn’t determine the quality of the outcome.
Will I remember everything?
Most people remember the session clearly. Some recall it in a dreamy, slightly hazy way – similar to how you might remember a vivid daydream. Either way is perfectly normal.
Is there anything I should do to prepare?
Come with an open mind and try to avoid caffeine for a couple of hours beforehand (it can make relaxation harder). That’s really it. You don’t need to do homework or prepare anything specific.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you’re working on. Some issues (like quitting smoking) may resolve in one or two sessions. Others (like anxiety or trauma) may take four to six. I’ll give you an honest estimate after our first meeting. I never recommend sessions you don’t need.
The Hardest Part Is Booking the First One
Honestly? Walking through the door (or clicking the Zoom link) is the bravest part of the whole process. Everything after that is gentle. Safe. And far more pleasant than you’re probably imagining right now.
I’ve been doing this for over 25 years. I’ve sat with teenagers, retirees, CEOs, tradies, mums, athletes, and people who’ve never spoken to a therapist before in their life. Every single one of them was nervous the first time. And every single one of them wished they’d come sooner.
